The Shining- Analysis

The Shining Opening Clip

The clip opens with landscape aerial shots of very isolated, yet picturesque landscapes. That teamed with the eerie non-diegetic sound playing gives the impression that the film is a horror, but because the audience don't see any violence during the opening clip, we can possible rule out a slasher horror-type film. Even though the landscapes are filmed during the daytime, there is a lot of shadow so the lighting looks quite dark, giving a sinister portrayal of the settings. Because the opening clip contains a lot of isolated landscapes, we can assume that the particular setting for the film will also be in an isolated area.

No characters are introduced in the first 2 minutes, but it does show a car travelling through a number of different places continuously, which gives the impression that the character(s) are travelling a great distance.
